Mariposa
earned the name "Mother of Counties" in California when it occupied
more the one fifth of the State in 1850. Its quick growth like
all the areas along Highway 49 is due in great part to the discovery
of Gold. Mariposa County today covers 1,455 square miles and is
home to the Yosemite National Park's Valley. Access to Yosemite
is through four of the five major highways and the only year around
entrance.
Mariposa, the Spanish name for butterfly,
was named by Gabriel Moraga for the swarms of butterflies he saw
along Mariposa Creek. John C Fremont the famous pathfinder of
the west founded Mariposa with a land grant. In 1854 he donated
the land where the famous court house, still standing and still
in use, was built for $9,000. Many of the streets are named after
his family members. The Court house is one of many historical
sites, including St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Jail, Trabucco
Warehouse and the Schlageter Hotel. Another must see is the California
Mining and Mineral Museum. With over 20,000 specimens on display
including the "Fricot Nugget" one of the finest and largest pieces
of crystallized gold in existence.
An
area at the base of one of the most beautiful alpine settings
on earth, Yosemite, Mariposa sits in the grasslands surrounded
by oaks, conifers and chaparral. The summers are hot and the winters
mild.
Mariposa offers a wide variety of accommodations
including many bed and breakfasts, dining in quaint restaurants,
antique shopping, wineries, golf courses and an abundance of recreational
opportunities. The area industries aside from recreation and tourism
are timber, mining, livestock, and agriculture.
