Biking - Mountain and Road
It is prohibited to
ride on self guided and interpretive trails and in all wilderness
areas, as well as around Pinecrest.
Lyons Reservoir: Beginner
to Expert. A gentle 5 mile climb up a ditch road to the
reservoir. You can ride around
the lake and enjoy the scenery or from the reservoir
advanced riders
can continue on any of the several connecting trails. From SonoraTake
Hwy 108 past Twain Harte. Left on Confidence South Fork Rd. Just past
Sugarpine Rd. and on the right is a gate, go through the
gate and ride along the ditch road.
Cedar Ridge: 7miles
each way. Beginner to Moderate. From Sonora take Hwy 108
to Twain Harte
Dr. to Joaquin Gully, then to Mt. Elizabeth Rd. The bike road is a ditch
road that crosses Mt. Elizabeth Rd. Turn left onto the ditch.
For a more difficult and longer ride stay
on Mt. Elizabeth Rd.
Hammill Canyon: Beginner
to Moderate. An 11 mile loop through the canyon around
the reservoir.
Beautiful scenery with moderate climbs around Herring Creek Reservoir.
The land is part of the Summit Ranger District which allows
biking there as long as riders stay out
of the Emigrant Wilderness. From Sonora take Hwy 108 past Pinecrest
to
Herring Creek Rd. Continue until the pavement ends then 1-3 miles to
a fork. Bear left or right, the route
forms a loop around the water.
Twain Harte - Columbia:
For the expert rider. A difficult, 35 mile ride with lots
of technical uphills
and downhills. Doing the ride in reverse order from Columbia to
Twain Harte is not advised. Bringing plenty of water and
food is a must. The route is an unimproved
county road. From Sonora take Hwy 108. Left on Confidence SouthFork
Rd. then across Sugar Pine Rd. to South Fork Rd. This turns into Italian
BarRd., follow it all the way to Columbia. Take Big Hill Rd. to Middlecamp
to return.
